Alumni gathered Halloween weekend to judge the spirited Homecoming lawn decorations. Contestants included residence halls and Greek houses across campus.

The theme was “Flashback Fayetteville.” Themes and decorations included hogs dressed in 1960s clothing and past pictures of Old Main.

Bethany Rutledge, an alumnae who lives in Fayetteville, gave her thoughts on the competition.

“It adds unity and flare on campus in bringing housing and Greeks together,” she said.

Several halls were paired with one another in the competition. Pairings included Hotz Hall and Reid Hall. Humphreys Hall and Yocum Hall combined to form another team. Futrall, Holcomb and the Northwest Quad halls were also paired up.

Alumni judged the lawn decorations based on several criteria. These factors included:

  1. Presentation
  2. Showing school spirit and unity
  3. Interpretation of the “Flashback Fayetteville” theme in a creative and unique way

The University of Arkansas Alumni Association provided lunch and transportation for the judges. The judges traveled from site to site in golf carts provided by the university.

The results were announced at the Homecoming 2015 football game between the University of Arkansas and the University of Tennessee-Martin.

The Northwest Quads, Holcomb and Futrall team received first place for lawn decorations.  The runner-up was Maple Hill.

Each hall also created a banner to go with the lawn decorations. The winner of the banner competition was the Founders, Gregson, and Gibson halls team. The runner up group included Hotz and Reid.

Greek life also competed in the banner and lawn decorations festivities. Greek life held a competition of their own. They were judged against one another and not against the residential halls.

Stephanie Biesterveld, an alumnae from Bentonville, explained that the event was a good way to instill competition in the students.
