Whether you’re a pedestrian or driving a vehicle, paying attention to traffic and crosswalks is an important safety practice. Here are some important tips and reminders as you’re using the crosswalks around campus and the city.
- Only cross the street in marked crosswalks on campus.
- Do not enter a crosswalk until the traffic signage indicates that it is the appropriate time to do so.
- Some crosswalks around campus have lights that can be activated to alert drivers to slow down and stop for pedestrians in a crosswalk. Be sure to hit the button to activate the lights when approaching those crosswalks.
- Make sure to avoid texting while crossing the street and be sure to look up and in both directions before crossing the street. It’s always good practice to make eye contact with drivers prior to entering a crosswalk.
- Take your ear buds out of your ears when at a crosswalk or crossing the street so that you can give your full attention to the cars and traffic around you.
- Keep an eye out for cars that are entering and exiting driveways around campus buildings.
- Be careful at intersections. Drivers may not always be aware of the pedestrian traffic around them and may fail to yield the right-of-way, especially when making a right turn.
- Think about wearing reflective or bright clothing when taking an evening run or bike ride and consider using a flashlight when out walking after dark.
- Drivers: make sure to come to a complete stop when pedestrians are in the crosswalk.
- Bikes, e-scooters, and skateboards should be walked through the crosswalks.
