As the leaves begin to change and the temperature gets cooler we begin to transition from Summer into a season the kids call, “Cuffing Season,” where romance is in the air and love is in bloom and new relationships are forming left and right. Here on campus this season comes into full effect around this time and we start seeing couples pop up all around us, so it’s our job to ensure that the relationships being had are ones that are safe and loving. One of the ways we do this is with the help of SPEAK, a University program that focuses on educating students about the signs of an unhealthy relationship and what to do if a situation ever goes from bad to worse.

Maple Hill East Second Floor had a program recently where they decorated cookies with a SPEAK peer mentor who is a student with special training in relational violence. She lives in our neighborhood and is a resource for any resident who may be experiencing an unhealthy relationship but doesn’t know who to turn to. This was an opportunity for the residents to build a relationship with their SPEAK mentor and grow a little more comfortable talking to her in case a situation ever arises where they need her help.
