As winter break approaches, we want to provide essential details to assist you with your end-of-semester preparations.
Key Dates
- Thursday, Dec. 5: Last day of classes.
- Friday, Dec. 6: Reading Day (students not returning for Spring 2024 may begin checking out).
- Monday, Dec. 9 to Friday, Dec. 13: Finals Week.
- Sunday, Dec. 8: Quiet hours begin for finals week at 5 p.m.
- Wednesday, Dec. 11 (Noon): Deadline to submit Extended Stay Requests.
- Friday, Dec. 13: Residence halls close at 5 p.m.
- Saturday, Dec. 14: Fall Commencement.
Residence Hall Closing Details
The following residence halls will close at 5 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 13, and will reopen at noon on Wednesday, Jan. 1, 2025:
- Founders Hall
- Futrall Hall
- Hotz Honors Hall
- Maple Hill East
- Maple Hill South
- Maple Hill West
- Reid Hall
All other residence halls will remain open with limited front desk services.
If your hall closes, please ensure you take any essential items with you, such as basketball tickets, clothing, medications, and airline tickets, as you will not be able to retrieve them until the halls reopen.
Preparing for Departure
Before leaving, please complete the Winter Break Checklist included in this email. An RA or professional staff member will enter your room to verify that you have completed this checklist.
For students completing a room or hall change or not returning to the University for the spring semester, please log in to the Housing Contracting Portal and select “Statement of Non-Enrollment/Departure Time Selection” to access important information and schedule a checkout appointment.
Your appointment must be scheduled at least 24 hours in advance.
Winter Break Checklist
Hall staff will conduct room checks on Dec. 15. Please ensure you complete the following tasks before your departure:
Secure Your Room
- Lock your doors and windows
- Leave blinds down and open
Unplug and Power Off
- Lights, alarm clocks, hair dryers, irons, curling irons, coffee makers, computers, video game consoles, TVs, and appliances (except for refrigerators)
Thermostats
- Set to 68°F
Refrigerators
- Clean and dispose of any food
Prohibited Items Reminder
- Alcohol (and containers if underage), candles, incense, space heaters, halogen lamps, electric blankets, weapons, and certain appliances (e.g., open-coil heating devices)
Additional Tasks
- Dispose of trash properly
- Seal open food items (e.g., cereal, chips, noodles)
- Remove belongings blocking your heating/cooling unit
- Clear floors of personal items
- Secure bikes or scooters in the proper location or take them home
Maintenance and Dining Information
Routine pest control and air filter changes will occur during the winter break.

Extended Stay Requests
If you need to stay in your hall past 5 p.m. on Dec. 13, please submit an Extended Stay Request through the Housing Contracting Portal by noon on Wednesday, Dec. 11.
You will be notified of your hall director’s decision by 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 11.
Approved residents must vacate by noon on Sunday, Dec. 15.
