Students at the University of Arkansas competed in a Gingerbread House Competition Friday in Hotz Hall. The competition has been going on for about 10 years and this year’s competition featured over 20 contestants.

Faith Yam, graduate assistant for Hotz Hall programming, gave her thoughts on the event.

“It’s really cool to see engineers get together with architect and humanities majors, just to see the diversity,” Yam said.

Yam explained that the contestants are supplied with candy and icing and are given an hour and a half to complete their gingerbread house. The displays included everything from traditional gingerbread houses to Star Wars-themed creations.

A delicious version of the Millennium Falcon made an appearance at the competition.

The competition is a good way for University of Arkansas students to usher in the Christmas season. Annelise Zaring, a freshman kinesiology major and resident of Hotz Hall, explained how the event help give residents a break from school work.

“It helps remind everyone of the joy of the holidays in the midst of a stressful week,” Zaring said.
