The Pomfret Luau continues to be a good time, year after year. This is one event that you can always count on for an exciting Saturday night.

Maybe it’s because students are thrilled to finally be on campus or it’s just the excitement of going to their first college dance party. Whatever the reason may be, it was a night to remember for all of us.

The luau kicked off Aug. 19 with a fire alarm. I guess you can say it started off very lit ??.  The real fun started once the firemen made sure it was safe for everyone to return to the building.

The second you stepped in the building you could see the colorful Hawaiian luau-themed decorations, and when the disco ball lights started flashing, the dance moves were unbelievable.

The DJ cranked up the tunes. He played anything from 90’s hip-pop to today’s top hits. He even took requests from students and played a few salsa song.

The crowd grew as the night went on, and each time a popular song came on, the crowd amped up and dance circles formed.

New friends met and old friends saw each other again after summer break.

James Brumleve brings some sweet dance moves to the luau.

Everyone had their very own special dance moves they wanted to show. Of course, there were some classic moves like the sprinkler, the running man, and my personal favorite the Shim Sham which is just a back-and-forth shuffle movements.

I talked to James Brumleve, a freshman from Plano, Texas, who showed out on the dance floor with some crazy, effortless dance moves that left the audience in awe.

“I had a lot of fun dancing tonight, this event was a lot better than I expected!” Brumleve said.

Although music and the dancing played a huge part to the successful Luau, I must say the variety of food provided was extremely impressive.

There was a room filled with all types of dessert, you could get ice cream from Andy’s, yummy sweets from Rick’s Bakery, fruits, vegetable and other types of finger foods.

Time seemed to pass by so quickly as the night progressed, but just before it was time clear the dance floor we all participated in the now-famous Cupid Shuffle line dance.

The night ended in style.
