The Residential Interhall Congress held a “Who’s RIC?” event at the Union Mall, March 3. The event was designed to raise awareness for the organization. “Walking-tacos” were handed out to everyone who attended.
The Residents’ Interhall Congress is an organization designed to improve the quality of life for the on-campus population of students at the university. It is a governing body composed of executives, legislative representatives and judiciary officials.
“It is a challenge to keep students informed about all the things the on-campus government does,” RIC President Russell Sharp said.
The organization’s goal is to develop residence hall policies, procedures, programs and facilities to best serve the interests of students living on campus.
“I definitely think that they are trying to help out, trying to make their name well known,” said Kassandra Salazara, a sophomore international business major.
Before the event Thursday, Salazara said she was unaware of what RIC was or what the organization did.
Sharp further elaborated on the events that RIC has been involved in on campus over the past year.
“We worked with housing with the ‘Writing on the Wall’ ceremony, they built up a wall with sayings of hate and discrimination and tore it down,” Sharp said. “We also participated in the ‘It’s on Us’ campaign. It’s a sexual assault awareness campaign to educate students on sexual assault and how to prevent it.”
RIC helped facilitate the semi-annual lighting tour, an event to identify safety hazards on campus and relay them to University Police and Facilities Management on campus.
A walking-taco is made by taking a bag of Frito Lays and combining it with taco fixings such as lettuce, tomatoes, cheese and ground meat.
